When a Metal Part Needs to Be Reproduced

A metal part breaks, wears out, or becomes unavailable from the original source. The question is whether it can be reproduced. That depends on what information exists for the part: drawings, specifications, a sample, dimensions, or a combination of those.

KorFab reviews the available information and the material to determine whether the part can be fabricated. The more complete the information, the more directly the part can be quoted. A drawing with dimensions and material specified is the strongest starting point. A sample part with critical dimensions marked is the next best.

What KorFab Needs to Review the Part

Before confirming whether a replacement part can be made, KorFab reviews the available drawings or specifications, the sample part if one exists, the critical dimensions, the material and thickness, and the required quantity. Send what you have and the team will confirm what else is needed.

  • Drawings or specifications
  • Sample part if available
  • Critical dimensions
  • Material and thickness
  • Quantity needed
  • Finish and any secondary operations

What KorFab Can and Cannot Do

KorFab fabricates custom metal components that match the shop capabilities: cutting, forming, welding and finishing in steel, aluminum, stainless and Corten. If the part fits those processes and materials, the review can move forward.

KorFab does not produce automotive replacement parts, appliance parts, or consumer repair items unless the work is confirmed to fit the shop capabilities. A photograph or sample alone does not guarantee exact duplication. The part needs to be reviewed against the available information before fit can be confirmed. For more on what KorFab builds, see where to get custom metal parts made and the custom metal parts manufacturer page.

Have the Part but Not the Complete Drawing?

A replacement part often exists as a physical component, a partial set of dimensions, or an older drawing that no longer matches the current part. You may have the part in hand but no formal documentation for it.

KorFab can review what is available: the sample, any dimensions you have marked, the material if you know it, and the quantity needed. From there the team determines whether the replacement part fits the fabrication capabilities. A sample alone does not guarantee the part can be reproduced, and KorFab does not claim exact duplication from a sample alone. What KorFab can do is review the available information and tell you what else is needed before the part can be quoted. For buyers who also have drawings or CAD files, the metal fabrication from drawings and CAD files page covers that path. For parts built to buyer supplied specifications, see made to print metal components.
