Why Finish Requirements Belong in the First Quote Request
A quote without the finish is a quote for part of the job. Adding coating later changes the price, the schedule and sometimes the part itself.
A finish is not a coat of paint added at the end of a job. It is an operation with its own schedule, its own handling and, occasionally, its own effect on the part. A quote that leaves it out is incomplete.
The price is different, not just higher
Finishing is priced as an operation on a quantity of parts with a surface area, a colour and a masking arrangement. Quoting fabrication first and finishing second splits one number into two, and the second one arrives after the customer has made a decision based on the first.
It also hides the comparison. Two fabricators can look far apart on cutting and forming and converge once coating is included, which is a thing a buyer cannot see if the finish is discussed later.
The schedule is longer than it looks
KorFab fabricates in Phoenix and coordinates finishing through partner shops. That means the parts leave the building, are coated, and come back or ship onward, which is a step in the timeline rather than a task running in parallel.
A quote built without that step produces a date that is wrong by the length of the finishing cycle. Nobody intends that; it is simply what happens when a quote describes half a job.
Finish can change the part
- Threads, mating faces and grounding points often have to stay bare, which is a masking decision made before coating.
- A welded assembly is coated after welding, so the sequence is fixed by the finish.
- A part that has to be coated on one face only may be handled differently than a full coat.
- Corten left to weather is a different requirement from a coated part in the same package, and specifying it late invites the wrong treatment.
What the first request should carry
The finish, the colour reference, the gloss or texture, which surfaces are coated and which stay clear, and whether the finish is decided at all. A line saying the finish is still open is far more useful than silence, because it tells the estimator which parts of the quote are stable and which are provisional.
What to specify when components need powder coating covers the content of that specification. This article is the reason to send it early rather than a second list of what goes in it.
