What to Confirm When Your Required Date Changes

A required date is a review item, not a setting. When it moves, the useful request says what changed and what the new date has to achieve.

Drew Brodfuehrer, Estimating Leader

Dates move on nearly every project. What matters is that the change arrives as information the shop can act on, rather than as a new expectation applied to work already in progress.

A date is reviewed, not entered

When a request says a part is needed by a date, that date is checked against the work: material, machine time, the sequence of operations and, where relevant, the partner finishing step. The answer that comes back is a reviewed date, not a promise.

If the date then moves, the review happens again. A moved date is not automatically accommodated, and it is not automatically a problem either. It is a new requirement to check.

What the change notice should contain

  • The order or quote reference it applies to.
  • The original date and the new one.
  • What caused the change, in one line. A delayed site, a client decision, a redesign. The reason matters because it usually predicts whether the date will move again.
  • What the new date has to achieve: a crane booking, a shutdown, an inspection.
  • Where the work currently sits, if you know. Material ordered, parts cut, parts at finishing.

Why the work in progress matters

An order that has not started can move without consequence. An order where material is cut, or where components have gone to a partner for coating, has commitments behind it that do not move with the date.

Saying what you know about the order's progress helps the review say what is possible. Hiding it does not make the change easier.

When the date has to come forward

Bringing a date forward is the harder direction, and the honest answer depends on the work rather than on willingness. Say how much earlier and why. Where a component sits in a sequence, one part arriving early can be more useful than every part arriving slightly early, so say which pieces matter first if everything cannot move.

What is not on offer

A rushed date does not become a commitment because it is urgent. KorFab holds no finished stock, every part is fabricated to specification, and finishing runs through partners. A quick turn is the way the shop works; a guaranteed timeframe is not something a quote promises.

The habit that helps

Say the date and what it depends on at the start of the order, so a change later has something to be compared against. What helps a fabrication quote move forward covers that first conversation.
