Repeating Component Requirements Across Multiple Locations

A second venue is rarely a copy of the first. Confirming what stays the same and what does not is what makes a multi location order work.

Dan Caronna, Vice President

A second site is where a good component package proves itself, and where an assumption becomes an expensive remake. The parts may look identical in a photograph, but buildings rarely cooperate.

Assume nothing is identical until it is confirmed

Ceiling heights differ, wall conditions differ, equipment pad locations differ, and a component dimensioned from a finished floor in one building may be dimensioned from a slab in the next. So go through the list deliberately:

  • Which dimensions are fixed by the equipment and therefore identical.
  • Which dimensions are set by the building and therefore need confirming per site.
  • Which dimensions are adjustable by design, such as a slotted hole or a shim pack, and whether that is how the site variation is being handled.
  • Whether the part is meant to be identical for brand consistency even if the site would allow something else.

The answers turn into two groups: a repeat part, which runs from the stored program, and a site specific part, which needs its own drawing.

Finish consistency

Where a chain of venues should look the same, the finish reference has to be the same specification rather than "the colour we used before". Say the colour and the gloss, and note the standard the second order is matching. Coating runs through a partner shop against a specified colour, and a reference is what makes two deliveries match.

Quantity and release

State the total and how it splits across locations. KorFab can deliver to multiple project locations, with the planning depending on dimensions, weight and destinations. What it does not do is hold a finished batch for a site that is not ready; each release is reviewed when it is placed.

This is the practical difference between a multi location rollout and a storage arrangement, and it is better understood before the schedule is written.

The drawing set

One drawing per unique part, numbered so that the same part at two sites keeps one number and a site specific variant gets its own. A drawing set that duplicates a part under a second number is a set that will be quoted twice and may be built as two slightly different parts.

Where to start

Preparing metal components for a restaurant fit out covers the first site. This article covers the second, which is a different problem even when the components are the same.
