Preparing Tube Components for a Welded Frame
The cut pieces decide whether the frame closes square. Sizes, joint detail and the marks that identify each piece belong in the request, not at the bench.
A welded tube frame is only as good as the pieces that arrive at the bench. If the ends are square and the joint needs a saddle, the welder spends the afternoon filling gaps. If the ends are shaped and the pieces are not identified, the frame is assembled by trial.
What the joint needs
Say what kind of connection each end makes. A tube meeting a flat plate is a different cut from a tube meeting another tube at an angle. Saddle cuts and cope joints are what the machine produces, and they are programmed from the drawing, so the geometry has to be defined rather than left to the fitter.
Where a joint is a mitre or a straight butt against plate, say so. Where the end needs to sit flush after welding, say that too, because it changes what the review looks for.
The pieces list
- Profile size and wall thickness for every member, written separately rather than as a note covering the frame.
- Cut length for each member, measured as the drawing defines it, and whether that length is to the end of the tube or to a reference face.
- Quantity per member, not just a total piece count.
- Holes, slots and notches, with positions referenced to an end or a face.
- Any member that repeats, so the program runs once and cuts many.
Marks that make assembly possible
The machine engraves or marks as it cuts, so piece identification can travel with the part: member number, orientation, or a match mark between two pieces. Ask for it when the frame has members that are similar in length, because a frame assembled with two pieces swapped is a frame that gets cut apart.
Angles and fit up
Where a joint is not 90 degrees, the angle belongs on the drawing with the member it applies to. A note that says all joints at 45 is only useful if every joint is at 45.
What the review does with the package
The package is checked against the machine envelope: round from 3/4 in to 6 in, square, rectangle, angle and channel from 1 in to 4 in, wall thickness from 1/32 in to 5/8 in, and material up to 25 ft long. Round material 2 in or under can pass through for longer pieces. Where a member falls outside those, it is a review conversation rather than a silent substitution.
When the pieces become a frame
If you want the cut tube delivered as a welded frame rather than as a bundle, say so in the same request. Ordering parts or a completed welded assembly sets out the scope question, and what to include in a welded assembly drawing covers the assembly drawing itself.
